I know that nowdays you can just pay for a change but there is a way to get if for free...worst thing it can happen is you get 3hour ban, a warning and a random name from GM (happened to me)
Requitements:
1. 2 different accounts: the one you want to change your toon's name and a friend's account
2. 2 different computers(to have different IP adresses)
3. 1 or 2 days patience (not neccesarily but will make your story more viable)
the scam:
1. login into your account on computer nr.1 and delete your character...do not connect to WoW from this computer untill you will contact the GM even with another account.
2. ask a friend to login into wow with another account from computer nr.2 and create a character with the exact name you had...tell him to play on the character untill lvl 10 or so
3.wait a couple of hours then login into your account from computer nr.1 and create a lvl 1 character... subbmit a GM ticket and write the following:
"Hello i have a problem. My character was accidentaly deleted by my son while i was at work. Is there a way that i can get it back please?"
when you talk with GM have a newbish approach dont say what character, class or realm before he asks you and dont write the word restore.
GM will probably ask you why you let your son play...you will state that you occasionally allow him to play warcraft and you must have forgoten to log out when you went to work.
If he says that sharing accounts is forbidden tell him that he is your son and you read in EULA that it is allowed.
Ok now the fun part: He will say that your character name was taken...then ask the GM if he cannot give you back the character with another name...tell him that you can provide him a new name just to get your character back.
NOTE: GM might try an aggresive approach to discourage scammers...dont respond rude and aggresive. GM is also able to track the ip's that logged on into accounts so be sure to proceed as i explained
