Scam or just being smart...can't decide.
This worked last night on my server, made instant average AH value without the wait.
Last night I found that I had about 10 large radiant shards that I have had forever and was going to sell them so I could buy some new armor. When I looked on the AH, they were going for about 13g a piece, average around 15g, but I needed the money right then to get the gloves, not hours later.
So I posted in trade, "Wts blah blah blahx10, 10g a piece. 5g cheaper than AH! DO NOT PST, come to stairs in SW, first come first serve."
Next thing I know, there are like 5 dudes in front of me arguing about who was there first using /s chat. So I told them, that instead of bitching, just bid for it because I needed the money right away, but didn't want to piss anyone off because I couldn't figure out who was there first.
Long story short...Ended up getting 15g a piece for them, more than I would have made by undercutting the AH, and without the wait.
A scam earlier touched on the psychology of advertising, and that's exactly what this does. They are still thinking in their head that they are getting a better deal than the AH because that was in your original trade chat, when in all reality, they are paying equal to, or more than the AH price!
NOTE: You could use a friend as a plant in the crowd to up the bids...but nothing insane.

I'll fill in the part I left out. This "scam" honestly wasn't planned, I was just trying to undercut the AH and make the money fast, but this is how it played out.
The first guy showed up and immediately opened the trade window. I'm getting ready to trade him straight out for 10g per shard and the other guy /s chats "I'll give you 11g ea." So I close the trade window with guy #! and he's says "WTF?" So I was like, "this dude is offering 11g, soz bro, money is money." Then two or three more dudes showed up and I just said, "this dude is offering 11g, soz guys." So then, dude #3 says he'll give me 12g...and I guess because of pride or whatever, they bid up to 15g. One of them stated he'd just get them from the AH and the guy who bid 15g collected his prize, not knowing he paid me 2g more than the cheapest on the AH.
With planning, and/or a friend helping, you could do this over and over with the right mats or gear and probably make more than the AH average, seeing as how many people will jump on the chance and never check the AH in an attempt to get to you first. Then, when your "auction" starts, they're still thinking that no matter what, they're going to get the item for cheaper than the AH, though they really aren't.
Lol. Not really a scam though since they offer the money themselves. But anyway, good work.
good try but not really a scam
thats not a scam thats just what the trade channel is for.
wtf is all the flaming about
this probably the best post ive seen in days
great job +rep
Thanks!
Worked again today on an enchant I originally listed as free.
me - /2. FREE [Enchant Chest - Major Health] my mats! Just trying to level, tipping would be nice tho.
Two guys hit me up and said they were "omw" from SW to IF, where I was.
Guy 1 didn't say anything after that, while Guy 2 stated that he'd give me a 5g tip for being generous...then like two seconds later Guy 2 said nvm, he had to go help some guildies (sure).
This is where is gets funny. Guy 1 shows up a few minutes later and I told him sorry, that Guy 2 offered me a 10g (white lie) tip for it and I am waiting for him to show up. Guy 1 counters with 15g, which is what the ench costs normally on my server, anyway. I don't know if he realized he had just paid full price for the ench, or if he just didn't care at that point after traveling from SW. Either way, it worked!
LIE LIE LIE...name of the game!
