[Guide] How to Reduce the Risk of Getting Scammed (On Paypal)

This guide deals with DISPUTES (The most common paypal scam)

THE SCAM

This is how the scam goes. A seller wants to sell his WoW account. The buyer offers him money. The sale goes well, buyer pays, seller gives account. The seller goes to sleep and wakes up in the morning to buy some stuff on ebay. BAM! His funds are locked because the buyer filed a dispute on his money and the seller can't use the money.

There is a 99% chance that the buyer would win the dispute, thus getting back his money.

HOW TO PREVENT THIS SCAM

There are TWO EFFECTIVE ways to prevent this scam

Method One : Ebay Method

Step 1: So you both agree on a price, time to agree on the method of payment.

Step 2: Explain to your buyer that you are going to create an auction on EBAY for a PIECE OF PAPER and that he is going to have to purchase that auction (and you would ship him the piece of paper)

Step 3: The buyer agrees to this method (most scammers would be long gone by now). You set up your auction and set a BUY NOW price of the price you are selling your account for.

Step 4: The buyer pays for the auction via paypal and you give him the account info. You go to the nearest postal office and ship the piece of paper to him.

If the buyer files a dispute, you can provide paypal with both EBAY TRANSACTION ID and SHIPPING ID and chances are you will win the dispute


Method Two : Filing then Cancelling Dispute (DOES NOT WORK ANYMORE)

Step 1: So you both agree on a price, time to agree on the method of payment.

Step 2: Explain to your buyer that payment for the account would go in this order:

He pays you
He files dispute
You give him acc USERNAME and PASSWORD - From here on give him THREE minutes to cancel the dispute.
He cancels dispute
You give him the rest of the information


Step 3: The buyer agrees to this method (most scammers would be long gone by now).

Step 4: The seller pays you, files then cancels dispute. You give him the rest of the information

Once the person cancels the dispute, he won't be able to file another dispute on the payment, so you should be safe (still would be wise to spend money quickly though, as he can file a cashback from his credit card or something of that sort)

Have you had any success at all with method two? I imagine people would be hesitant to go along with it because you could easily scam them once the dispute is cancelled. You can easily change the account password so they will have absolutely no access to it once you have secured the funds.

That could become a very good idea for a confidence trick when recall scamming...

Be all worried and concerned and say hey I dont wanna be scammed lets do this(method 2) genuine buyer becomes moe confident as you seem more genuine(if engineered correctly) then recall a few days later when he has stocked up on gold and he cant dispute his paypal stuff.

Nice idea, BUT by then the mark will demand full account info, and will obviously check the account to see if it indeed accurate. As soon as they have all the account info, it becomes a tug-of-war and very troublesome.

Haha, the cancelling disputes method seems to be quite popular (I used it a lot myself). However, PayPal has fixed this; doesn't work anymore.

I did this a while ago, he did open and cancel the dispute, but still i got a e-mail from paypal later that the money is on hold since the buyer told them he wasnt the one who did the transaction, i even posted and gave them a tracing nr, didnt work.

Recently this same thing happened to me. I'm guessing this doesn't work anymore, sigh.
