I don't know really where to put this guide, but I felt here is the safest. (Feel free to move this to "WoW Guides" if it belongs there). This is a simple way to improve run speed, and minimize lag during play in WoW. Quick simple steps.
I will explain what each function does and why you don't necessarily need it.
To start off - Open up your options menu in WoW, (Press Esc.)
Click the first option "Video"
Follow guide w/ screenies.
#1. Full Screen Glow
Function: Softens lighting, and edges.
Why turn it off?: Basically makes the game look smoother, disabling doesn't do much. (Takes off Drunk effect though ex: blurry screen ect.)
#2 Death Effect
Function: When you die, the screen becomes entirely inverted almost black and white.
Why turn it off?: Basically it's useless, sure if you like to feel like your dead it adds a touch of ghostliness, but other than that its just mucking up your performance. (Personally it's freaking annoying.)
#3 Character Shadow
Function: Self explanatory - Makes small shadows at the bottom of players.
Why turn it off?: Takes up extra performance speed, and is rarely noticed. (if you like the shadow you can skip this one.)
#4 Texture Resolution/Filtering + Weather Intensity
Functions: Texture Resolution and Filtering make the game look sharper, smoother and more detailed, weather intensity basically makes the weather stronger, and more detailed aswell.
Why turn it off?: You aren't actually turning this one on or off. Try adjusting this to lower settings, as you see fit. If you don't care for weather you can turn that way down, Make sure you are careful with texture+filtering as those actually effect the world around you.
#5 Basic "World Appearances" Effects.
Functions: Take a look at the sub group World Appearance, as you can see there are tons of options, ranging from spell detail to enviroment detail.
Why tune this down?: Depending on your machine you might want to push back some of these just a bit to further speed up wow.
#6 Windowed Mode
Function: Your wow goes from full screen to a windowed "windows" type of box.
Why turn this ON?: This has many bonuses, number one it makes wow run faster from my experience. Other added benefits are the easy selection of web browsing and other programs as you play.
7# Level of Detail
Function: This is actually designed to improve performance, by reducing terrain polygon detail.
Why turn this ON?: Just as the feature says it will help improve performance, by lessening the detail of the ground around you.
There are many other options you can take advantage of to make your overall wow experience faster, and smoother. These are some of the most simple, and easy to fix.
There are pros and cons to each video turn/off/tune down, please take into consideration that if you tune these functions down all the way wow is going to look alot different! In the end just ask Picture Or Performance, it's your choice.
Hope you enjoyed, (trying to contribute moreI can only do so much in graphics section)
