    2 things

1: That screenshot is taken from the PTR during one of the earlier 2.4 patches. Gm's appeared to fix something and people were freaking out. Many posted screenshots of the GM's who were having a good ol time with the players before the server was restarted. This image appeared in a thread on the wow PTR forums.

2: The GM's have a specialized client and don't actually see the in-game world unless they switch too that view and it's in a window on the left hand side of the screen.
The Gm screen shows a que of tickets, a list of responses & a knowledge base along with timers and server information. Another monitor shows a view various player statistics such as items & action logs and other server information.

I applied for a GM position a while back before BC came out and was escorted through their GM department.
The men who escorted me went through a short meet and greet with a senior GM and he pointed out what the parts of the system did.
Each system had 2 monitors, and the in-game client wasn't like ours in any way. Ours is far more stripped down.
Their in-game interface is also completely different than ours it shows in-game information about the server and whatever they have targeted.

EDIT: GM Island is a legacy area, there is no GM island anymore as in, the GM Island shown in screenshots and videos is no longer used. There is a GM area which is very very far underground(relatively) to the rest of Azeroth and is inaccessible to players.
The reason you get in trouble for visiting the old island is simply because you are making work for GM's that wouldn't otherwise exist. Players that run about getting into areas they are unable to get out of account for a small but noticable amount of a GM's workload.
They have a certain amount of actual tickets they have to get through and you running off to these places and potentially putting yourself in that situation and worse, telling other less smart players how to get there exponentially increase that workload.

Epic fail. This was ripped from the wow forums and was taken shortly after 2.4 was released.
