Account Name Change question

I played WoW long ago and quit in late 2006 or so. I was having health problems and trying to go to school so I quit WoW. I had a friend that had Hodgkins disease and was going through Chemo Therapy. Because of that he couldn't work and needed something to do so I let him have my WoW account. During that time he had to make a battle.net account; he kept the battle tag I use for everything but put the account in his name. Last month another friend bought me WoW with Pandaria so I created a new Battle.net account and leveled a character to 56. Then I found out the friend I gave my account to hasn't played since July 2011. We changed the email to one of mine and changed the PW but I cant change the account name which apparently prevents me from merging accounts.

So here is my big question, do you think there's some way to merge the accounts, or should I be strong and just let my new 56 go, and go by my friends name? I want to merge but I'm scared to death of getting one or both banned.

Just play by your friends name. Shouldnt have any downsides really. If it really bothers you contact someone who sells bnet name changes, should be someone here willing to do it.

If you call Blizzard they might be willing to help change the name on your account if you can prove your old account, which is now on the BNet, had your name as well. I remember having a somewhat similar issue and got it resolved that way by sending a scan of my ID. Just depends on how many hoops you want to jump through. Level 56 isn't hard to achieve at all these days, especially if you can get someone to RaF with you, anyway.

i actually got them to change it by saying it was a nickname and i didnt know all about its importance in account theft and it'd even be shown to people
