Restoring characters on a stolen account

First of all, if this is in the wrong section- feel free to put it where it belongs.

I have a question, if you manage to get your hands on an old account which you know contained high level chars back in time, would it be possible to restore those characters in some way?

The account wasn't merged with a b-net account but I've now merged it with mine. In transfers you can see that it had characters prior to this but has since been moved, can I ticket a GM for them to be restored to me even tho the account isn't/wasn't mine?

I want to do the same thing, bought some unmerged accounts with like 4 years played on them and only 2 chars with lvl 30 on them, my guess is that the guys that stole those accounts some time ago sold everything from the characters, transfered gold and deleted them. but do NOT try to contact an gm if the account is not yours, they will just see that the account name does not match the battle.net name and they will just lock that account untill the real owner claims it, if he doesn't...well the account stays banned.

Already contacted a GM using the web form, if you have an old account they'd never shut you down like that without a good reason. Non-matching names can have legimate reasons. However, I simply ticked "I've been hacked bla bla" and didn't really give any explanation, didn't want to go into too much detail so to speak.

Does someone else have some experience with this? You'd think there'd be ways to try to steal (back) the characters that once existed on it.

EDIT: in my character transfer page I can see that the previous owner (or someone else) moved characters to a new email. Tried to login to this mail, which was a yahoo one, and actually managed to guess his pass rofl@mrobvious, he did however have a secret question/alternative mail attached to it
