I discovered that its possible to play beta and retail simultaneously. If I let my friend play on my beta account (at his house) while I play on retail, will I get in trouble?

I think only risk you got is account theft if he is not that good of a friend ^^
Talking about WoW, we are in the World of Warcraft General forum after all :>
Aye sorry saw it a bit late. Clicked it from the shoutbawx ^^
What you need to realize is that BETA and retail are completely separate, as is the PTR realm. Of course you can log in to both, as it's like having 2 separate accounts. Technically, you could be logged into your retail, PTR, and BETA accounts all at the same time, and, since the BETA is not actually tied to your retail account (just your battle.net), it will still be active, including PTR, even without an active account.
There are many people on the PTR who don't actually have active accounts cause they can't afford it, too young to get a job, w/e but still enjoy the game in the PTR environment. Odd I know, but ya... not bannable dude. The only thing I'd be worried about is your friend being a douchnozzle and getting your account banned for his actions.
Account sharing is not something you will ever get banned for, especially not without warning. Generally what they do is lock your account until you change your password.
