Could this method be used to get to other outside the map areas perhaps?

You mean outside the instance for e. g. Kalimdor? No. There's a real endgamewall which disconnects you as you try entering it.

Thats btw a way to get to otherworld. I had many tries to get to the GM Island. With my mage i flew sometimes to the "realendgamewall" and got d/c. I logged in and d/ced again again and again.

Somehow the server ported me to the instance outland, because my hearthstone was there.

And yeah I was in the General Chat Desolace where the server recognized me at last being there.

It was kinda funny and I'm pretty sure it still works
