    Invulnerability vs. spellcasting guards

As a shaman, group up with your friends and go to an area where guards happen to be spellcasters, i.e. the Transitus Shield in Borean Tundra.

Drop your grounding totem, (NOTE: you must NOT have the grounding totem glyph for this to work!) and have your party members go wild and attack everybody in sight. The guards will retaliate and their spells will hit your totem.

As long as you the shaman, don't aggro the guards, the spells harmlessly hit your totem. No damage will be done to your totem and your totem will stay up for the full duration, essentially making your party members immune to the guards until they run out of mana.

Keep refreshing your totem and you can kill without worrying about guards. Keep an escape route in mind and drop grounding totems to cover your friend's escape.

Figured this out when WotLK came out, just retested it with the Cata updates. Worked earlier today on US - Stormscale.

This lets you attack the opposing faction on a PvP server without repercussions.

It lets a group of friends grief the shit out of anyone they want when near spellcasting guards without getting killed.

A different way to have some fun on a PvP server in most cases. Stop being such a negative Nancy.

Nice find. Will confirm with some friends later.

Very interesting. Does this only work with guards? or any NPCs that some players are friendly with and others are not? Say for instance I was in an ICC raid and the bosses in there were hostile towards everyone else but me...

It seems the mechanic is that as long as the guards are green (friendly) then they can't deal damage. And dealing no damage results in your totem staying alive and active.

I've screwed around with this a bit, and I believe as long as the guards are not hostile to whoever is dropping the totem, then this should work.

This is worth checking out with RaoV's trick where you become friendly to LK and ICC. If a Shaman were to do this, then drop a totem, would that kick out the disguise? Or would the totem stay and the effect be useful? This could protect against the Necrotic Plague, right? I don't have a shaman, and I am waiting to make a Dwarf one, so I can't try this.

This does indeed work on NPCs that are friendly to some but at war with others. Here is a little video i made:

Is anybody able to think of a list of places that have spellcasting guards? I've only done this in the Transitus Shield and I'm itching to try someplace new.
