i don't know if this still works, but quiete a while ago you could just repeatedly press the numpad '/' button to switch from running to walking and back again very quick. Everybody else will see you running (and at the corresponding position) until you stop this. Thus you could walk towards a cliff to fake jumping down.

Someone please tell me whether this still works ^^ Sounds more reliable to me :P
