[New to WoW Servers] A few inquiries

Hi guys! I have been searching high and low for a WoW Server development community and after finding many sites with their most recent posts occurring in 2013, I have arrived here.

Before I get to my questions I'll give a little backstory.

My history in coding and development started with a RS private server long ago. I was obsessed with the fact that I could edit some text and alter parts of a video game. For 4 years I studied Java and honed my skills until my server was exactly where I wanted it to be and there was nothing left to work on. My server died due to the changing times and I moved on to playing other more updated and professionally developed servers. Later, I turned 17 and became interested in WoW. At the time I was oblivious to the existence of WoW private servers until a person I was in a raid with mentioned a private server named "Mond-WoW". I befriended him and started asking all kinds of questions until ultimately I canceled my subscription and started playing Mond.

I played many different servers over the years and eventually landed on Heroes-WoW's fun realm. After countless hours spent waiting for people who were running raids I needed to run to further my gear progression, and an unfortunate encounter with staff, I decided it was time to dust off the old booleans and classes and start my own WoW private server.

Now that I've gotten that out of the way, we can get to my questions!

    1. It seems that 3.3.5a is the most popular among WPS players. Is that due to it being the most stable source from a developers perspective or because that's generally the update where WoW was in it's prime? Would it be better for me to use WotLK or Cata?

    2. Is there any software that requires purchasing?

    3. I plan to have 2 realms; one for my envisioned semi-blizzlike fun server and one for pure PVP. Would that be difficult?

    4. I have not yet read any tutorials or gathered any information because this idea just came about like.. 3 hours ago. I possess General problem solving skills and I know my way around a computer quite well, so I'm wondering what is the most detailed tutorial to follow? (In reference to question 1 the answer to this would vary depending on if you suggest WotLK or Cata)

While I'm waiting for this to accrue some replies I will explore around this forum and try to familiarize myself with everything associated with WoW Private Server development.

    Thank you for reading!

    1) 3.3.5a was worked on the longest (no emulator developers wanted to work on higher patches) and subsequently over the years has been almost perfected. It is the most stable and least buggy by a long way. TrinityCore's master branch is now WoD and they are working heavily on that, though it is nowhere near completion. Cataclysm and MoP branches exist but they are nowhere near good.

    2) No, not really.

    3) No. Multiple realms is not difficult assuming you use the same emulator and patch.

    4) The most up to date and useful guide is probably the wikipedia's: TrinityCore Home - TrinityCore - TrinityCore Collaboration Platform

    Much appreciated!

While I was reading your reply the bug in your sig caught my peripheral and I initially had the thought "WTF is on my screen" but the thought left as soon as it came when I scrolled to reply xD Ya got me.

    -Edit-

The Trinitycore.org site is down so I can't access the thread titled "How to properly install git on Windows". I guess i'll just download all the other stuff and get it set up while I wait for the site to come back online.

    -Edit 2-

While instaling the MySQL since there are no specific instructions on the installation type, I clicked default for developers. I am missing Excel, Visual Studio, and Python. I presume I need to install these but I want to get confirmation here first.

I need to know if these (Python and Excel) Are necessary. I have installed Python and the MySQL installer still says that the check is failing. Also, Excel requires me to input payment information so I don't want to do that if I don't absolutely have to.

You shouldn't need Python nor Excel for MySQL. Are you installing the right version?

Yes that's what I downloaded. During the default setup it said that those programs were missing and required for MySQL to run properly. :| I installed them already though.

    Encountered a syntax error.

I know about syntax errors from using Eclipse for Java but I've never used HeidiSQL. :P

    -edit-

Been searching for some way to get to that text but I can't seem to find it.

    -edit 2-
Found a way to load the TDB_FULL into HeidiSQL where I could see the text, but it wasn't lying when it said it uses a lot of memory. It crashed my computer. :|

I always use SQLyog Community Edition, and it works fine. Programs such as Navicat can't really handle queries this big.

Yes it uses a lot of memory, the SQL stuff. You need about 4GB to run Windows, MySQL and a WoW server for a small player base.
