    Hosting Private Server on VPS?

    Hello,
I recently came to know that people are hosting their servers on a VPS, I tried to find a guide on "How to" but I still can't fine one because of too many dead links.

    What I know :
    1. I know how to host a website on my own computer.
    2. I know how to host a website on web hosting servers like 000webhost.com, 1&1 etc.
    3. I know how to run a wow server on my own computer with a compiled applications such as Holysemu.

    What I don't know.
    1. I don't have a clear understanding of what a VPS is.
    2. I have a very little experience in Linux.
    3. Considering I'm hosting a wow server on VPS, does my PC performance, bandwidth etc. still matters?

Thus, can someone give me a quick explanation of how a wow server is ran on a VPS. Do I need to upload all my files like wow client, repacks etc. to the server? I'm completely blind
    Thank you.

VPS is a Virtual Private Server. Its like having another Computer on the internet. What I did when i made a Private server was rented a Windows VPS and just made the server there. Its really easy.

I Had no clue how to use linux which is why i chose windows even though its more expensive.

If its on a VPS, your PC Performance or Bandwith wont matter since it'll all be hosted on the VPS which is run by the website you rented it from.

To set up a Wow server on a VPS (Windows) is exactly the same as doing it on your normal Windows PC. Just gotta upload all the files to the VPS and run all programs there.

You downloaded your SW from internet to your PC, you can download it directly to VPS from VPS

But Im little bit worried about performance, because VPS are usually lowend configuration

You dont need to upload your game client. Just the files that will be needed to run the server.

Take note on this, VPS' are usually not very powerful and have strict bandwidth consumption limits.

Throwing in my two cents here and maybe a few extra. I've never tried hosting a WoW server and I don't know much about the requirements needed. If you can run it on Linux, do so. It's cheaper to rent a Linux VPS and you'll also need less resources. Do NOT use a GUI if at all possible, it just creates more overhead. Learn the basics of the Linux command line and roll with it.

I use Linode and host a website and a Mumble voice server on their smallest plan with no issues. They're an "unmanaged" VPS, which means you are your own support, unless your physical node goes down or something like that. They've got guides up the yin-yang to help you learn and get the most out of your VPS, as well as rather nice dashboard that shows all your resources and options before you even get into the VPS itself. Can't post one here, but let me know if you're interested in a referral link; I'll send it in an email or something.

Keep in mind that hosting a private server is against Blizzard's ToS and EULA that each user accepts when using their software, so be prepared with backups in case you get taken down.
    Nothing is impossible.
