Connecting to WoW private server question

what do i have to do to connect, just put in their host name in the realmslist?

also, do i have to have the exact same version? im running with 3.0.3, can i connect to one with a higher update? if i update it more, can i connect to my own server still?

But just for the records:

- The realmlist is the hostname of the server yes
- And the client should be the same as one of the clients that the server supports (lists can usually be found on their websites)
