[Newbie] Dumb question about Server in General

    Hi community,

I've got a quite stupid question about private server. I already searched a little in this forum, but especially the server-section contains quite too much amounts on information

I would like to setup a private server just for my own. Locally, in order to make my first footsteps with machinima, without getting banned....

There are tons of Tutorials here, but I haven't found information, whether it would be a good idea to have a local copy of the WoW-Game when logging into a private server. The Realmlist of course, will be changed. But are other files involved, causing problems when switching back to the live-servers?

What about warden. Seems to be a local process scanning always, when the wow-client has been startet. So....if there is any infection-software involved, warden should scan this process as well. It should make no matter, whether it's a private server or not. Hm.... hope you know, what I mean.

Would be very grateful if someone could answer to my silly questions

    Thanks a lot in advance,
    J

If you don't talk about it on retail servers or the WoW forums, you won't be banned. Just keep quiet and it's all good.

The realmlist is the only file involved. Servers can have custom patches that add new content, but it's exceedingly rare and you'd know about it if it had one because you would have had to install it yourself.

However, you *will* need a second copy. Emulators aren't up to 3.2 yet, so you'll need one for retail and one for private servers.

Warden does not do anything unless you're connected to retail. It runs a Warden scan and reports back to the server you're connected to. Since you aren't connected to a server with the capability of even working with this data Warden does absolutely nothing.

Emulator servers do have 3.2 (trinity and aspire) but it's really just 3.1.3 updated to work with 3.2 client so you don't need to install a separate WoW unless you want to play on a server that's only 3.1.3

Thanks to both of you for the good explanation.
Anyway I'm too coward to try cam-software on the live-servers
The advantage in using a private one would be empty streets. Could be nice sometime, especially since the map viewer doesn't work anymore with current clients.

I will have a look for trinity and aspire. Thx.

TrinityCore does not have a 3.2 repository at this time.

And I thought I'm not able to use the search-function
Anyway...there is still the option to have a second install, although it will take hours again.
