    Client capacity on private server?

    Hello All!

I'm considering my first private server, but I'm curious about player capacity. I'm sure it will depend on server specs, but I was curious if anyone has an idea how many players I could support on this rig:

    AMD Athlon 64 x2 4000+ (OC'd to 2.5Ghz each)
    4GB Ram
    750GB on 3 Drives
    Win XP Pro
    Clients on a Local Network

Install would probably be your basic Mangos/MySQL setup.

    Thanks in advance!

    Thanks for the input!

    Seriously though?

I thought the bandwidth requirements were in the neighborhood of 10-20Kb/s per client. Wouldn't that saturate a network at just 50-100 clients on a 100Mb network, and 8-10 times that on a Gigabit network?

I figured the CPU would be the bottleneck and not the network.

Can't really say 1000-2000 players unless you know the internet speed.
If his running the server on a 30kpbs upload speed, 1000-2000 players goes out the window. :P

Post the internet connection specs your on and you'll get a better idea of how many players your server will support.

While I think 1000-2000 is maybe just a tiny bit of an overestimate, considering you said clients will be on a LAN I don't think the number would be that low (though I have no idea how you intend to get 500 players on the same LAN). I'm thinking anywhere between 500-800. Bandwidth usage rarely ever reaches the 10-20kb level, that's the maximum. Maybe during a 40-man or something. Most of the time usage will be at 3-5kb/s, with some spiking to around 8-9 occasionally.
