honestly i dont know if mySQL works with vista, personally i dont see why it wouldnt. I use HeidiSQL, i dont see a problem why either wouldn't work on vista. I've used numerous programs on both vista and xp, and I have yet to find one that works on xp, that doesnt with vista.

mine tends to do that, even now. but i close out of everything, and try it once or twice and it tends to work. Try using the Ctrl+Alt+Delete and close out of all the programs dealing with the private server, and try opening them again. Sometimes this happens from it already being open, but not closing when it should. just kinda running in the background

One thing i shoulda mentioned at the beginning has to deal with the repack and using HeidiSQL or whatever your using. But the repac comes with accounts already set up on it. Some people may know the account names and passwords to log onto your server. The reason im letting you know is because when i started i didnt.
But anyways. Open up HeidiSQL, on the right menu area, go to "Characters", the "Accounts".
Look at the table at the right and click the tab that says "Data". This is a list of all the accounts that run on your server. Take note where your account is. If you haven't made this server public, there is also a list of a few other accounts. These are the ones i was talking about came with the repac. If you dont delete these, anyone who downloads this repac, and knows how to use heidiSQL, would know about these usernames and passwords. And would have access to Admin and GM modes on your server.
Just a little bit of info I thought I would throw your way. =)

it is not the best and would help with screen shots lots of them
Me personally do a manual set up of the whole server
and stop this hamachi crap its so unsecure

Please be aware if you use this guide to only give your server info to your friends
if you put this public your server will be hacked faster then the time it took to understand this guide and actually set it up

Look at both of your config files

Your most likely getting a error and it closing you just dont notice it because its flashing to fast
usually happens when the password or user name is wrong

i dont know anything about the error but there is a way to add accounts manually.
Go to the control panel and start MySQL.
Open Up HeidiSQL or whatever program your using.
On the left menu. Go to "Characters" and then "Accounts"
On the right Screen, Find the tab that says "Data"

Click the + and use the following values.
Acct: Just any 2 digit number, thats not already used. ex 90
Logon: What You Want As Your Account Name
Password: What You Want Your Password As
Encrypted_Password: Leave Blank
GM: (AZ)-Admin (A)-GM (0)-Player. Only use the letters
Banned: 0
LastLogin: 2009-03-26 14:23:41 (Use any date and time, but in this format)
LastIp: 127.0.0.1 (it will change auto determined on computer)
Email: Leave Blank
Flags: 24
ForceLanguage: enUS (or your language)
Muted: 0
Banreason: Leave Blank

The click ok.
Your new account should be created. Restart everything and reload WoW, Using the Account Name and Password
