Alright lets get on with it.
Thing 1. Always have some playtime into the server if it is up like at least a week or so.
Thing 2. Post ways you could improve the server (also shows you ahve been playing on server not jsut saying you have)
Thing 3. Show room for improvment. Explain to them if you do not currently meet what they would like ask them to explain why so you can improve. This shows that you are willing to learn and advance.
Thing 4. Never ever say you NEED this job. This will make it seem no one else will hire you why should they?
Thing 5. If they have forums make sure to get noticed getting noticed is a good way to be known also might what to send in a gm ticket jsut to thank them for there hard work.
Thing 6. If you want the job learn from the server if the server is having a hard time with x explain a way to fix it.
Thing 7. Keep 1 step ahead in server news. This will put you ahead of the game get to know what you are dealing with.
Thing 8. Do some research on what works. Like checking out other servers and see what people did and did not like.
This not only works in wow it works for jobs as well :P
