Hello mmowned,
I have seen this appear on numerous occasions and i thought i would share the information about dedicated servers and vps's (virtual private servers).
Dedicated Server
A dedicated server is a computer somewhere in the world e.g. usa, China which you have 100% control over it, for example you can download files, upload them, use .exe's, do anything you would do on a normal computer but remotely.
All the computers resources like RAM, processor and hard drive space is yours to use.
Dedicates can be quite expensive if you get a really good one or they can be cheap if you know where to look. Also a good dedicated can hold around 400+ people
Vps (Virtual Private Server)
A VPS is also a computer somewhere in the world e.g. usa, China which you also have 100% control over it. You can do exactly what u can do on a dedicated but its slower.
The main different is that the remote computer is shared between 10-100 people. This means that the ram and processor is divided up between thos people accordingly to what you paid for. The files you download the other people can't see tho. Also a VPS can hold around 100 people.
Heres an example:
I pay $35 for a VPS, i would get 10gb hard drive space, a guaranteed 1gb ram and a small part of the processor. Now if you paid more you would get more hard drive space and more ram but the same share of the processor each time.
A VPS is really good if your a newly started server that wants to get a few members before it starts buying expensive things.
A Dedicated is only good in my opinion if you know that you have like 100+ members who want to join and play on it regularly.
Main Differences
Hard drive space
Amount of RAM given
Speed of server
All vps's or dedicates can be used using Microsoft's remote desktop.
