Choosing Between Ascent or Mangos

I will be talking about the ups and downs of both emulators and other details.

For Funservers:

If you don't know how to modify the core to enable LUA scripts, raise level cap and allot items over 2000000 then go for Mangos. Burlex tries as hard as he can to keep Ascent a VERY strict Blizzlike emulator.

Mangos would save the new people in emulation a big hassle. Although they both use mysql to store their information. The difference is in the core themselves. IF you can modify ascent's core and compile it yourself, go with Ascent.

Blizzlike:

Ascent for sure. This is Burlexs' main goal, emulate wow 100% and make it blizzlike. Mangos could also be used for blizzlike, although ascent has MUCH more features. The only thing though is that some revs ascent releases in their SVN sometimes are incredibly unstable to the point where you can't even login.

More Stable?

If a new patch comes out, then Mangos. Ascent just goes ballistic with errors in their releases when a new patch is released. Ascent has like 15-20 revs come out per day, I find it ridiculous. If they can release 1 or 2 per day , though at least make them stable that would be much better. if burlex puts in 1 new line in the core, it's a new rev!

Use ascent when a new patch has been out for awhile.

Which One is Easier?

I don't believe ascent is easier then Mangos. When I put my first server up just for me I had used ascent because I couldn't get Mangos running. People say it's more advanced because you have to type a little more. Trust me, it's easy. Once you use ascent you'll never go back to Mangos.

Ascent also had many addons posted on mmowned and other places.

For a Public server with 150+ online

It;s not for nothing the top 50 wow servers use Ascent. Just test out your ascent cores before making them public. For under 150 people go for Mangos, the releases are much more stable. The ascent emulator although is not as stable each update can hold more people and is built more proffesionally than Mangos.

My knowledge of Mangos isn't as vast as Ascent, although I know ascent very well , I modify my own cores to be extremely funserver, I will add onto this as My knowledge of Mangos increases. Everything I have said about Mangos hoewever is 100% true facts.

Ascent has better support, MaNGOS goes crazy convincing people that it isn't an emu and they don't give support for WoW issues.

Ascent/antrix exists for less then a year, while MaNGOS exists for more then 2 years. MaNGOS used to be very unstable and coudn't hold a lot of players, but things are different now.

It's more like this now:

Ascent = Huge online ,less stability and less features implemented.(Spells for example)

MaNGOS = Less online , better stability ,lots of working features.(with ~150 people online , uptimes can reach up to 4-5 days.

I like MaNGOS more, because of it's community and matture devs and patches are checked more carefully before they are applied to SVN.

If I was unsure about the choice, I would just try both of them.

lol i never was able to get a server running (i tried Mangos but i didnt like it) so i went directly into ascent plus rep
