repacks

Can anybody give me a good starting point on how to make your own repacks for these emulator programs? i need to read a few good article's on the basics of how some of this stuff works.I have managed to successfully setup my own private server but i'd like to be able to picture what each programs function is in my head for good future reference.I don't like to just "follow somebody elses directions" it leaves me kind of empty in the head you know?
