    An interesting idea...

    Let me preface this by saying that I love to create total conversion style wow servers. I have made 2 and attempted a 3rd (things came up though).

    I have been toying with the idea of people being able to pick what spells they wanted when they created their character and pick what talents they want too (as in any talent any class has by way of quest based npcs). Now this idea has merit no doubt, although it may have been done before. But then I came up with something else, something that would bypass the mana problem altogether (that being, warrior rogue and dk spells no costing mana and those classes not having mana for customization). A server based off of the idea that all spells are granted by items.

    Not like books that teach you a spell, like items that have an ability tied to them (think goblin rocket launcher). So you would have to pick gear based on what spells it let you use so you could create the right mix for your character. It would allow the use of any spell in the entire game regardless of its normal cost and it would allow for additional limitations being applied to spells that could break the game if unchecked (think bubble+bladestorm+the dk's grabby arm ground thing).

    Then with that in place a massive crafting setup (remove 2 skill limit ect) you could make the right gear setup for you. because there are so many spells, farming for the right stuff would take infinity+1 years with a properly made server. Then of course epic/instance gear would have maybe 2 or 3 usable spells (Dunno if thats buggy or w/e I have not tested it yet) so you could expand you're character more. And this would take place in a fully customized world (and by world I mean small area that gradually gets expanded).

    So. Anyone have any ideas, input, flames for me? I would like to make and host a 3.0.9 server based on this (and probably will) so if anyone would want to play on it or would like to test stuff or even help me make it gimmie a shout.

    Interesting. Its not very hard to make items with on equip or use items, but they usually must be equipped to be usable. This would limit you to 16 spells I believe. But lots of combinations would be cool. My setup would be like this:

    -Fresh core
    -populated database
    -Clean out the tables for starting gear and spells
    -Create multiple quest chains that lead to various basic "classes" (as in at the end you have 16 pieces of gear all geared towards a custom class idea)

    Other things would be that you should include lore behind this. Wouldnt be as fun without it. (If you wanted to go far a decent acronym, each piece of gear is a "jutsu" that you use XD Way too much Naruto lately.) Also make sure that there are cooldowns, and constantly balance available spells. Possibly make certain types of pieces?

    Yea I do need some lore, I have been playing fallout 3 lately and Iv been thinking about doing something with that kind of theme (limited infrastructure lots of bandits ect). Yea like I said pieces of gear with multiple spells per piece would be the hopeful objective so that you could have a better selection of spells. Although even if multiple cooldowns on a single item arnt very friendly owning items to swap out for other spells is still almost as good. Its like respecing but better.

    I like the idea of types of pieces too, that is I could have offensive, defensive, and misc (like slow fall and that kind of spell/ability grouped on one item) with better names of course.

    Less grouped onto one item, and more on a type of item. Necks are always misc, shields are defensive, etc.

    i was thinking of doing something similar on my sever but i was thinking of converting all usable spells to consuming either mana or energy instead of what they are currently. removing all but 2 classes. one warrior based and one mage based. their starting stats being the difference. having the spells learned by either trainers or items or a combination. gear would be made with one of the classes in mind. like warrior gear would have a mix of +Strength, Agility, Stamina and -Intellect, Spirit, mana. then mage would have the opposite. stamina being the only one that would not necessarily be negative on either. any class could use any item or wear any armor piece but it would reflect how well you perform. a mage could wear plate but the negative effects would weaken them severely. it would be nice if the spells for warriors cost more for mages and vise versa. so using items to train spells might be the better alternative. i dont know if this has been done before. so forgive me if it has. i havent looked into this a whole lot but have done similar things. just not on this scale. like i said i have played with the idea. but at the moment am short on time to try to do it.

    I've seen something like this before actually on an old server I used to play.
    The devs would simply add an ability (With a cooldown) to an item. The item will be only that, a cast. Players were asked to download an addon that would take away the Question marks you get from making custom items.

    Tl;dr

    Make Item
    Add Spell 'Use'
    Set Cooldown
    Put on Actionbar / create a /use macro
    ???
    Profit!

    i have actually been working on something similar for a bit now, i call it player made custom classes. i based this off of Oblivion, meaning players will get to choose their spells and talents, and even their armor proficiency and weapon skills, of coarse it will all balanced so there won't be OP combinations.

    i already figured out how to do it, and what i need to do has been done before (not the player made custom classes, but certain steps i have to take), but i'm not going to reveal how i'm doing it untill i'm done making it.
