Help me choose a cpu processor

Hey im trying to choose between these two products

    Newegg.com - Intel Core 2 Duo E8500 Wolfdale 3.16GHz 6MB L2 Cache LGA 775 65W Dual-Core Processor - Processors - Desktops
    Newegg.com - Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 Kentsfield 2.4GHz 2 x 4MB L2 Cache LGA 775 Quad-Core Processor - Processors - Desktops

I am building the computer from scratch and is for computer gaming and maybe private server hosting....

Also a question about motherboards, say it can hold up to 12gigs and I put 6gigs of ram on it I have 6gigs left, right? then if I put a video card that says memory 1gig does that mean I only have 5gigs left on my motherboard.... Thanks!

You're not the first one to ask about these two cpus. Read what other people have said:
    E8500 vs Q6600 - Google Search

And no, you do not subtract the GPU memory from the motherboard's memory limit

While this is true, you DO substract the GPU memory from the OS limit. If you plan on getting 6GB RAM, anything but using 64bit OS would be stupid.

If you are just between those to go with the Dualcore, but if you want to know what I am doing soon is this: Newegg.com - Intel Core 2 Quad Q9550 Yorkfield 2.83GHz 12MB L2 Cache LGA 775 95W Quad-Core Processor - Processors - Desktops with this on it: Newegg.com - ZALMAN 9500A 92mm 2 Ball CPU Cooler - CPU Fans & Heatsinks
    OCed to a nice level.

Of course. Even with 3GB RAM going with x86 isn't wise. Always plan ahead
And though both processors support PAE, programs would still see 32bit addresses, which means you can't use more than 4GBs a process.
But that's a whole different subject
