Blizzard plans to rid wow of private servers!

Today when I was messing around with my own local host server I noticed something...

As we all know the normal realm list is:

    Code:
    set realmlist us.logon.worldofwarcraft.com
    set patchlist us.version.worldofwarcraft.com
    set portal us
Now if you change the realm list to connect to your favorite server, obviously it does so...

With the addition of the new battle.net accounts (Which blizzard plans to make mandatory in the future) You find that you are still able to log into your retail wow account with your retail info [email protected]--password.

Not only can you log in with your retail account, but while the set realmlist is edited, you can also log onto your private server account with your normal info name--password

So here is the question, when these blizzard accounts become manditory, will the realmlist also dissapear?

maybe so, however realmlist file removal wont stop private servers, we simply going to make our own launchers which can simply modify the realmlilst and if not, the realmlist values will be deffinetly encoded in the core and eventualy it will be cracked.

Every mmorpg must have a realmlist, no matter what it looks like it will always be there.

what they will most likely do is code it into the executable, so you can either force the outgoing connection to connect to a private server or hack the executable and change the ip it connects to

uh because battle.net is currently hardcoded in and it sends data to Blizzard before sending it to your realmlist. How it works is

User -> Battle.net either Pass -> continue to account selection | fail -> continue to connecting to the realmlist. Since the Battle.net server is not part of their logonserver.

Hope this makes sense. Oh, and they're not trying to get rid of private servers. If they were they'd remove the realmlist file end of story

Doesn't really matter, you'd just have to redirect the IP address to act as your own in the hosts file. (Editing the host file is "safer" to some people, maybe so? :P)

I like how you make a declarative statement, "Blizzard plans to rid wow of private servers", as if it were an official fact, and then in the final words of your post you write, "will the realmlist also dissapear? ".

No, Blizzard isn't really making too much of an effort to eliminate private servers.
If they were they'd remove the realmlist file end of story
    .
    Pretty much.
