What I need to start a server?

Ok ive been trying to do all these repacks and compile my own and its not really working...... i almost had one and I'm so lost once I get to the ascent file stuff I dont know where it is and I cant find its and its all I really need

Things you'll need:

MySQL
TortoiseSVN (or RapidSVN, or any other SVN program)
Server source - get it from the SVN of your choice, use Tortoise to checkout the source
Visual C++ 2008 Express - I recommend this because it's free to use. You'll use it to compile the source you've checked out.
Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 comes with VC++2008 so unless you get a repack (eww) you don't need to download it seprately
A DB for your server, popular ones are WhyDB and NCDB.
Patience, and plenty of it.

Either find a good guide or follow the wiki of your favorite flavor.
