Have own server AND play retail?

I was thinking about making my own private server, when the whole retail thing crossed my head. Last time I tried to make a private server I ****ed up my whole wow and couldn't play on retail because I changed files. Is there any way that I could make a WoW private server and play on retail whenever I wanted without re-installing WoW? Thanks.

there shouldn't be anything wrong with your WoW from a private server, they are two different files, seperate from each other

Just double up your WoW, Install it in 2 different places so you can play a private server, and Retail.

Your computer will have to handle 2 WoW though. Simply follow the following:
Copy your WoW folder in C:\Program Files\ (if windows) and paste that into your local disk drive (C:\).

If thats confusing I can give more in detail... and better explanation.
