Are private servers a security threat?

Hey.

I never really looked closer into Warden, but I guess the module is loaded from the server connected to or the client at least gets a hint from the server where to load Warden from.
Wouldn't it be pretty easy to abuse this to execute malicious code in Wow's context, I mean as a non-trustworthy private server admin?

It shouldn't be a problem. I've never heard of any bans coming from this, but it could be a remote possibility.

It's impossible with original wow client due to each warden module being signed by blizzard (RSA) (client won't load any custom modules).

I was not worried about a ban, more about being infected with malware.

Note that a clever private server designer could theoretically run the live Warden modules which are signed by Blizzard, though.

Indeed. some are doing this.

But as TOM_RUS said, all modules are signed and the loader would need to be patched to load an unsigned warden module. This would require either a launcher of some sort or a modified wow.exe - in which case you probably have other things to be concerned about.
