A good article, showing that small but still popular audience of the role players.
Blizzard has never had strong support for RP realms, changing the label on the realm does little in terms of in game content. The new systems in general, none of it supports RP. It's easy to RP solo, as the quests often have strong lore and it is all very engaging. But as a group, or with other players... Nothing supports it as a MMO for RP players. Which is why RP private servers have actually become extremely popular, simply because then they can get the features they want for RP.
I don't like this part:
"Because these two exceptions to the rule are no longer viable options, it can easily be said that roleplaying guilds are effectively dead. Look forward to seeing public roleplay outside of guilds, but say goodbye to dedicated military and academy-themed RP guilds."
I assume you have not played on one of the major EU RP servers, Argent Dawn?
There has been no changes of the RP activity on the Alliance side after the cataclysm release, actually, there has been quite an notifying increase of them. Of course the RP scene is not as big as it once was, but it sure does exist.
The thing is, RPers create their own reality. That is the whole thing with Roleplaying, taking a role of another person/being. Like the Defias Brotherhood guilds, or the Silvermoon RPing on the Horde side.
Just as you and stoneharry wrote, there are not much support for the minority of RPers that exist now a days. But there are user-created tools for it. Some examples of it is Gryphonheart Items and Reputation, and Argent Archives.
Argent Archives is one of the best communities that has been made, according to me. You can create your own personal profile for your character, there are RP events listed every day.
It is just as I said in the beginning of this comment, the RP scene and RP guilds are far from dead. It will never die.

This analysis is bogus. Aphel, you play on Moonguard. So when i see you post things like this it is rather annoying as you know as well as I that none of the military or RP guilds are crumbling, infact the ones already established are thriving all the more.
pls can someone tell me the realm of this svr??
I'll just say this... Since Cata's release and all the new players in WoW now. On US Argent DawnD RP Realm we have had a major increase of hardcore RPer's when their was hardly none and the few that did exist were majorly terrorized in trade chat, Horde side at least. I am strictly PvP for The Horde only and that is about as far as my RP has gone but it has just been a blast with all these new hardcore RP people coming to WoW wanting to learn PvP Content because they feel it is their duty in their Role Play. Our guild has every sort of content player in it but we generally greet and talk in a RP format in our guild chat and out of character in whisper messages. I don't believe I am a good RP chatter but I am getting better and finding it a major thumbs up addition to my PvP content that I loved so much already. All these new players wanting ME to teach them PvP and then watch them role play with it is really getting to be fun despite their lack of skill in PvP. - Troll Hunter Jinobiwun. Thanks for the great comments!
