I do think its strange. But if blizzard want to realese cataclysm as fast as possible, they dont mind the model of vanessa that mutch. Im sure their focus is on the new instances and cities.

Only quick jump i know is where you as Worgen (thanks to info from Dies Irae) are beating the shit out of some worgens for some quests, then you find yourself 1 year locked up as a worgen

You can use Anduin for this as well, since he was stated to be 10 in vanilla. Hes got a new model for Cataclysm and he's been sent off to Theramore (I think) so it looks like he's about 16-17.

Seeing she was shrouded in shadow, could she have something to do with the Infinite Dragonflight? Which could explain the time issue. Just a thought.

Vanessa can be as young as 17-18 in Cata, which would make her 12-13 in the vision (vanilla time).

Sure, the model used looks much younger but it's not like there are a lot of them to choose from.

In the trailer for it from blizzcon it says that deadmines will have a heroic version.. For level 85's maybe? So she might be the end boss in the heroic DM
