Soft bans don't matter
I'm seeing all these devs and other people testing theories and doing calculations for why we are receiving soft bans and what the threshold is. My message to these folks is use your energy and knowledge elsewhere. Soft bans are completely irrelevant now that permanent bans have been implemented. We need to come together and figure out a solution for this much bigger problem, people are botting at 3km and still getting perm banned so whats the point in chasing the cause of these soft bans if we are going to get perm banned anyway?

Perhaps temporary bans are related to permanent bans. The average user is going to receive no or very few temporary bans for playing normally.

Agreed softban and perma ban are two separate issues. Had a lvl 21 account with only one catchflee ban and the next day it was perma ban.Criteria for perma ban is not related to soft ban

soft bans, regardless of whether they're directly relevant to permabans or not, are an indication that you managed to trigger bounds outside of normal play. therefore, they are very useful when theorizing about what, in particular, triggered the soft ban. of course the goal is to stay within the given bounds that Niantic has in place, so tweaking behavior through trial and error would make you less likely to be permabanned. there's the assumption that permabans result from triggering something far outside of a typical softban would be in place for. whether or not that's an invalid assumption, only Niantic knows, so of course it's more reasonable than unreasonable to assume they're both unrelated and related but for completely different reasons. ie: softbans from strange behavior & location, permabans from device/ip/log scans separately -- with softbans also leading to a permaban if its not a device/ip/log scan that hits you first. we have to keep narrowing it down

It is not always connected to soft ban. Started a new account yesterday. Logged into it with a phone - gave the character a name after catching the initial pokemon. Ran the bot yesterday (necro 0.8.6) for 5 hours with a local IP (dynamic) in a location 15km away from home. It had humanised settings and getting about 9-14k xp per hour. Did not trip any soft ban whatsoever. Was watching the logs intermittently. Did not snipe. Closed the bot after 5 hours and refreshed IP before starting another one. Today morning this low level bot got the dreaded message. So, I can state for a fact, you do not need to have tripped a soft ban flag for getting a 'failed to..' message.
I will leave it to the experts to figure out what data the bots currently transmit which is used by niantic to tag all bots so easily.
I have another 3 botted accounts which hasn't crossed lvl 25. Will leave it dormant. But somehow sure, they will be banned sooner rather than later.
Will start experimenting new characters with poke go ++ (only location spoofing to nearby places)
PS: Did not attack or take any gym with the now banned account .. Logged into the account with a phone only twice.. First time to set the name and second time I tried, I got the failed message..

its not always related i can agree with that.
my buddy just started to bot his lvl22 account today, with 5kmph and lots of delays and miss throw percentage in the config which seems to most of us is a safe area to bot and has no reason at all to be permabanned. and well guess what? he just did get banned after 3hrs of botting "safe"
