They took it back because it wasn't caught in the wild. The girl was given it as a gift. Reports differ over why, some said a friend gave it to her, some said a romantic interest and some said in compensation for some problem with the game. Let's say she bought in-app stuff, didn't get it and complained and they said here's a free mon as compensation and it was articuno. They made a mistake giving it to her; they didn't make a mistake accidentally letting it spawn in game somewhere.
