How much did StarCraft cost to make? Blizzard hasn't said, nor is it planning to any time soon. What Blizzard will tell us however, is that the $100 million figure that appeared in the Wall Street Journal is not correct. Apparently the WSJ got its games mixed up. The $100 million-plus figure in the article referred to the development and upkeep of World of Warcraft, its massively-multiplayer online game."

Wow! Thanks for pointing that out. Looks like Wall Street Journal made a boo boo.

The new MMO is not going to be SC2. Conformed by Mike Morhaime.

Yeah, sorry to burst your bubble... but the new MMO will NOT be starcraft. In order for them to "announce" that it will a brand new game, they would have to have put a large amount of work into its development (and story), and thus would not change that. Its possible that in the future, they might make a "World of Starcraft", but the likelyhood of them doing that is slim, due to the fact that their new MMO will [hopefully] still be ruling the MMO world. Also, to someone who estimated 8 years on their release... I'm willing to bet its alot shorter of time, even by blizzards standards. I would say a maximum of 4 years... and likely to be less due to the fact that they will likely be announcing it at this blizzcon (at least some details about it).

Lol. This is one of the most idiotic things I've ever read. Despite your claims to the contrary, Blizzard has never done anything like that. They've made vague, guarded statements that suggested the opposite of what they ended up doing, but never have they made something so abundantly clear, then "gone back on it".

You COULD have written a decent article speculating as much, but you have virtually no information to back up your claims other than "Starcraft is cool" and the debunked $100 million figure that the Wall Street journal themselves admitted was incorrect. Furthermore, you have no context for how $100 million fits in the world of game development, so even if it were correct, you can't draw any correlation from it. After all of that, you go so far as to say something as stupid as "this is beyond speculation, you heard it here first". This makes you come off as a fanboy trying desperately to make others think you have some kind of "inside info" or "industry knowledge", when what you did instead was show that you clearly have neither.

I agree that it is plausible.. although I am not even close to sure enough about it to put any money on it.

also.. to those that are disputing it due to blizz "confirming" that it is NOT starcraft... Aphel already shot that rebuttal down, we are all aware of this claim but that doesnt necesarily make it true. it wouldnt be the first time that blizz blatantly lied about something in order to cover it up.

I do think its a bit strange that blizz put all this effort into making an MMO-Like engine with no MMO to go with it. They are not ones to waste millions of dollars on something that will never turn a profit.
I also remember a game called Starcraft Ghost that was supposed to be relased by blizz which was a FPS type game based on starcraft. I know that game was in late stage developement when the plug was pulled so I am wondering if they just did that to transition that over to an MMO.

    interesting...

Starcraft Ghost was going to be an FPS on gamecube. They've outright stated this this new MMO isn't Warcraft, Starcraft or Diablo, and that makes business sense too - they've just released SC2, Cata is hitting in December, and we'll probably see D3 next year if we're lucky. Yes, there's an outside chance they'll make a Starcraft MMO at some point, but the one they're working on now isn't it. Plain and simple. End of story.

As to the new engine, D3 and WC4 much?

way to bump a 2 month old post.

And starcraft ghost was canceled because it was not coming out how they wanted. If you do your research, blizzard has never released a badly reviewed game. Ever.

Have you ever heard of Diablo for the gameboy? That was being worked on, yet was never released as well.
