    Observations of a Lurker

Hello! My name is John and I'm a lurker!

I know you're all very fond of me being a lurker, but let's get to it. Everytime I come and check in on MMOwned I tend to find that 9 out of 10 times every thread is mainly some really obscure exploit or glitch. A lot of the time scams are nonsensical or completely obvious. There's a lot of repeating old ideas and exploits.

So John you may ask, why is it that people seem to just post these random ideas that no one cares about cluttering up the forums and making it harder to find the good exploits, explorations and what not? Well the answer is simple. To get any kind of respect on this site you have to have this magic chucky-cheese coin called Rep. And you get Rep by finding things and then posting them, if they're good you'll probably get rep. But it's not easy or commonplace to find anything worth posting, so people post anything in hopes of increasing their Rep. So ideally posters would gain reputation and respect in the community the old fashion way of being a good person and a contributing member of said community, instead of just trying to rack up enough Rep to not be shunned.

If this is already entirely obvious to you then why not do something about it? Yes it would mean changing the way the site works, but it would also mean less useless topics that do no one any good.

But what do I know? I'm just a lurker.

Are you suggesting that the Reputation system be removed?

If so, that would not work AT ALL, the entire site would need a complete over-haul. For one, who would you know who to trust? Usually members with higher Reputation are more trustworthy. Also, what about private releases? There are sections made for certain usergroups and up, so that members of those groups can make posts or releases that aren't public, but only to a select group of people, most of them being trustworthy.

It would also discourage contribution as well, because there suddenly isn't any secret areas of the site to unlock.

Also, the Shout Bawx would be a major issue, because it's only available to Contributors/Donators and up.
I used to be a Super Mod. Now I'm just Super, thanks for asking.

    take a way rep?
    no way

that would mean some terrible things to the site, it would be like the more posts you have then the more trustworthy you are, thats stupid. also you cant be promoted to epic member or anything, that too will aslo be made from posts, which will lead to people spaming.

what Errage said about contib im only 6 rep away! again.. lol

While I agree that the rep system is definitely not perfect, just simply removing it is not the answer.

thats true, the reputation thank god is more or less of a e-peen neutralizer. We should keep it that way. If some random ass person from Blizzard came in here looking for the best glitch in the game that say....gave you a million gold, would you really want blizzard to find it out? No keep it amongst the highest standing members and ones you can trust. Just an example there.

Like Innit says, people would then just start randomly posting trying to get their post count up. Epic fail. E-peen ftl

Also stop lurking, learn to model edit, hack or cheat and stop your bitching.

That would be... hell. Earn your damned rep like everyone else on the site, if there was no rep system it wouldn't take away the hate, a non contributor and + can be respected. It's just once you get respected you usually have contributed, or reached contributor.

thats the way it is for leechers or lurkers as you call it... many contributors / donators post their stuff in restricted areas of the site in order for their stuff not to get out to those who dont even bother to say thanks or do anything themselves to contribute..
