Sick of you old worn out computer? Don’t think its going to be able to run vista let alone cyrsis? Well there’s no need to go by a new rig you can just over clock your pc for essentially free and make your £500 pc compete with a £1,000 one.
But before we start a few things....
- Over clocking is not illegal but its tampering so you’re voiding the warranty.
- Some computers are easer to over clock some processors have over clocking facilities built in and are deliberately speced to handle over clocking but some are designed to stop it so the penny pinching corporations can get more money.
- ·Over clocking makes your machine heat up allot so although I did say it was free investing in a extra fan or heat sink means more over clocking facilities and less chance of totaling your computer.
- As you may of picked up from that lass one yes, yes there is a chance you will destroy your computer so 11 year olds with £600 machines you may just end up with your parents asking why your computers broken (and then when they send it to dell and they say oh someone tried to over clock the warrantees void) well don’t say I didn’t warn you.
- Increase by tiny increments and test.
How to over clock you’re CPU:
1.First you need to get onto the BIOS menu this is different on different computers it usually requires you press a could of F keys or maybe delete on start up when you start up you should see a message like press XXX to enter set up from there u can get on BIOS.
2.The text and names used on computer varies highly from computer to computer you going to need the option dealing with CPU’s and front side buses look around your not dealing with windows handy and nicely lade out menus kids this is the bare innards of the computer. Whatever it is it will refer to processor frequency, speed or clock.
3.In a perfect world you will be able to edit something called multiplier raising it raises the clock speed and nothing else, but that may not be there which is more likely so then external clock aka bus is the one to raise stick it up to 10mhz.
4.There will be another option to do with memory it may be called DRAM you need to lower the clock speed to as low as possible if there’s no option to do this then you may need to change an option to do so you may need to change a option like timing from auto to manual.
5.Now gradually raise the external clock speed by 10mhz at a time testing with CPU burn in www.users.bigpond.net.au/cpuburn.com to make sure you haven’t overdone it repeat until the pc wont load or crashes.
6.If the pc won’t boot you need CMOS reset. This either a small button or a jumper (a plastic thing that slides of a couple of pins) this resorts BIOS to default you’ll need to refer to the motherboards manual to locate it.
7.Then re over clock to the highest setting you have proved works then raise the ram by either one tier or 10 MHz than minimum if the pc crashes lower bus rinse and repeat until you have found a middle ground were both run as fast as possible.
How to over clock your graphics card:
NVIDIA:
1.Nvidia have over clocking tools in there drives but they hide them find them with Coolbits 2.0 for you
2.Right click on your desktop and select nvidia control panel click on the button marked standard view and it should switch to advanced view. Next click the great big button labeled 3D settings.
3.If you have enabled cool bits then you’ll see a link called change over clocking configuration under performance at the bottom. Select my own custom frequency and agree to the warning screen.4.You can then select find optimal settings and the driver will attempt to establish the highest safe GPU and RAM seed for the card. Click apply when done then see how stable it is with a couple of games.
5.If there is a problem tweak it a bit its also possible to go slightly over recommended settings.
ATI:
1.like with the NVIDIA right click on your desktop select ATI catalyst control center and select advanced mode
2.from the list of settings on the left you want the bottom one ATI overdrive if you want to do the you need to click on the padlock symbol on the top right to allow speed changes
3.Run automated over clock configuration utility. This will test the card and find out its perfect speed to run safely
4.Time for a break this may take a while to run when it’s done click apply run a few demanding games to see if the new settings are stable.5.If that’s fine and there is no glitches or overheating then click preserve AT overdrive settings at log on if it did cause problems then try lowering the graphic processor and memory settings status by about 10mhz a time.6.trail and error again if its running just to fine then go up a bit by 10mhz a time until it dose not work.
