Virtual Network Computing. Awesome program. I interned at my high school my Junior and Senior year with the computer tech, and we used this program a lot.

What it does:

VNC allows you to remotely connect to any computer on your LAN, or through IP if they have the server installed on their computer. Once connected you get full control of their computer from your remote station (e.g. we were in the main office messing with kids playing flash games on the internet. We would hit random keys to mess up their high scores, log their user accounts off or other random things.) Useful if you need to access something at the office but you're at home, if you need to help a friend or family member thats across the state that isn't as tech savvy as you are, or if you need to see what your kids are looking at when you're in another room.

The machine you connect to has to have the VNC Server installed on it, which can be password protected to prevent unauthorized access to the machine. To connect to a machine you need the computers actual IP address (not their local address e.g. 192.169.0.1 but their actual IP) the VNC client which is included in the installer (as well is the server) and the servers password.

Some anti-virus's can classify this as a potentially harmful RAT (Remote Administration Tool) but it's not dangerous unless you don't protect yourself

You can choose to have your mouse and keystrokes sent to the computer your connected to, or you can have it to where you can just watch whats going on and take screen shots etc.

Theres three versions, Free Edition, Personal Edition and Enterprise Edition. One of the key difference as far as remote administration goes between the free edition and the Personal/Enterprise Edition is the ability to drag files from your remote computers desktop to the computer your connected to.

The free edition supports Windows 95-XP as well as UNIX (Linux, Solaris, HP-UX) the Personal Edition supports Windows 95 - Windows Vista, but not Unix based OS's. And the Enterprise Edition supports Windows 95 - Windows Vista, UNIX (Linux, Solaris, HP-UX), and Mac OSX (x86 and PPC)

You can try the Personal Edition and the Enterprise Edition for free for a certain number of days.

All version are reverse compatible (In two ways actually, you can remotely access a user running a different version of windows and the other way is the Enterprise Edition is also compatible with the Free Edition)

Like I said above, some AV's find this malicious because it has a lot of the characteristics of a Trojan (e.g. remote administration/manipulation.) Thats why we scan with multiple Anti-Virus's because some AV's will tell you that a completely harmless program is very dangerous and its not. The RAT part of Clam's Find stands for Remote Administration Tool which is what VNC is used for.

It's safe, I've used it for 2 years now and never had a problem. Just as long as you keep your server passworded you're safe.

PUA when we are dealing with Clam AV stands for Potentially Unwanted Application heres a quote from their site

"With the release of ClamAV 0.91.2 we introduce the option to scan for Potentially Unwanted Applications. The PUA database contains detection for applications that are not malicious by itself but can be used in a malicious or unwanted context."

Because its a RAT if you dont have everything set up and passworded people can potentially use it how its not intended to be used, but thats the same with any other program in the world. So now lets look at the entire find spelled out

Thats what it stands for and what it found. Its basically saying the exact same thing as Kaspersky said, just not spelled out like Kaspersky did.

They have ports of VNC for the PSP and the Iphone/Itouch witch let you control your comp with them. Nice to have if i want to change a song with out getting off my fat ass .

Yeah, you can also control your computer from a remote location, and not just change songs from across the room. Nothing I didn't know but I forgot to put it here so +rep for you
