An official goodbye to MMOGlider.As many of you may have heard, Glider's motion for an emergency stay pending appeals, was denied by the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals. (9th CCA) With this (drastic, and admittedly not-thought-through) decision, MDY is forced to close its doors within the next few weeks. This is a goodbye to one of the most successful bots ever created for an MMO, if not the most successful.
The precedent set by this case, is not something to be taken lightly. If Blizzard does manage to win this case on any of its claims, you can expect much more stringent licensing on software, and many , many more court cases about software in general.
What happens if Glider loses the entire case?
This is a very serious question. Simply put, when/if Blizzard wins, software companies (see: Microsoft, Apple, Sun, etc) will be legally allowed to insert new bindings in their contracts. For the sake of a 'gamer example', imagine the following circumstance;
Blizzard prohibits the use of any Direct X hooking with its software. (WoW, SC, Diablo, etc) Widely used screen capture programs (Fraps for example) are now liable for copyright infringement, and CAN BE SUED. Doesn't make a whole lot of sense does it?
Another example;
Microsoft adds a new binding in the Windows contracts, disallowing the use of any software not specifically 'allowed' by Microsoft. This means, programs such as OpenOffice, Firefox, Opera, etc, are now illegal, and the use of them can be deemed as copyright infringement. Guess what, you can be sued! (This example may be a bad one, since it would infringe on anti-trust laws. But you get the point)
This case isn't just about 'not having a bot anymore', but more so whether or not we have any rights when we purchase software at all. In this day and age, where computers are almost more plentiful than humans, this isn't something that should be overlooked.
To Mercury, Hamut, and Vyze, I wish you all the best of luck in whatever your future brings you. You've been an incredible asset to the entire botting community.
My condolences go out to Mercury in specific, who has lost the most from this entire ordeal. You brought the world an amazing tool, but unfortunately, that tool was stripped away due to horrible decisions, none of which were your own. While I may not have always agreed with your style of code, or the way things may have worked, I've always considered you an incredible developer on nearly every level.
