Metal, Death Metal...but is that really singing? It's like Rap...but screaming. Anything that makes me have to strain my voice, whether yelling or just singing loudly kills my voice for days. Too many fatties I suppose...

If you don't have timing, Rap is impossible. If you can't keep in tune, country, R&B become tough. If you can't go out of your normal octave then opera and metal and most rock is out. So really, everyone can sing something, it's just have they tried! And people like Amy Lee or Peter Steele don't come along often that have multiple skills in vocals. RIP Mr. Steele

Screaming and growling is definitely the hardest and it requires skill (while someone would think not, it really does).
Opera is also extremely challenging and difficult.

This pretty much sums up this thread. Everyone can make some grunting voices and that stuff but to do it so it doesnt hurt your vocal folds takes skill.

Rap is probably one of the hardest (srs) for white guys. Try rapping an eminem verse as fast as he does without running out of breath its ****ing hard. Screaming, Growling and opera are definitely up there too.

There is a reason why Eminem is ranked in the top 100. He changed the face of rap with his lyrical attitude, as well as what is possible there after from race to signing people. To compete in a professional manner period is hard, I do view Opera and Good rap as the top ranking however.

Opera for the pure voice, rap for the on the fly vocals both take skill and knowledge. If you want to pinpoint each genre, you will find each one has their own attributes which largely can not be ranked except via opinion.

    This.

One thing that is different about rap though (Although I dont ever listen to it), is that in a freestyle (Rapping from the top of your head) you have to think as you go, which, if you put that together with having to make sure it makes sense, and making sure it sounds intelligent at the same time, takes a lot of skill in my opinion. This is why a lot of the high school dropout "rappers" suck ass.

I do completely agree though, to sing opera must be incredibly hard, and to go out on stage looking like a fool must take just as much guts ;P props to the opera singers out there.
I WAS DRILL ROLLED BY GZ. AND I LOVED IT.

its singing if you can say lyrics while doing it

growling is singing, moaning is not.

also, Id say opera. These fat people who sing at operas have half their chest taken up by their damn lungs and can sing a word for like 60-90 seconds, I would say that is the hardest genre to sing as you dont just sing long once, but many many times, growling is easy and fun once you get it down, opera is just long, and horrible on the throat.

Re: What's the harder genre to sing?

I've never had a problem with screaming and growling, so I don't know what this thread is talking about. The hardest that I think would be to sing is opera. Definitely.

Opera imo :P just cuz.... its sick.... :P hurts my ears ^^

but well... more to "normal music" then.... skills it takes to rap of course, and if you do it fast your insane imo :P i dont like rap tho...

Look at... hmm Metallicas Kill 'em All album. James is kinda... screaming alot in the songs there :P must be hard to sing a long song while screaming like that, but he even make it sound good... many hardrock/rock whatever, i've heard dont make screaming good at all ^^

But well... listen to some of the later Metallica songs or even live versions (easier to notice there) his voice have probably been damaged in some way cuz he seems to be struggling alot with the Voice... so well, screaming is very hard if you dont wanna damage ur voice

Thats my opinion at least ^^

I am a death metal vocalist, and we don't use any of that autotune BS. I also have such power with my growling that I could easily perform live with my band in front of a crowd of say, 20-50 people without a mic and still be audible.
