    The answer is: the egg.

    Through evolution, a population of animals underwent mutations that caused it to look similar to the chicken of today. Finally, after millions of years of continued mutation, one such animal got pregnant, and the baby (which is inside of an egg) had a mutation: it looked like and was the modern day chicken. So, technically, a non-chicken laid an egg that contained a chicken. That's how evolution works.

    Since there's a nice little thing we call "Evolution", the chicken as we know it must have come from a genetically different chicken/species, that, of course laid an egg that belongs to it's species, not to the chickens' we know today.

    In other words: CHICKEN WUZ THARE FIRST!

    What? Because of evolution, a non-chicken species laid an egg that contained a chicken. That's how evolution works. Mutations. The mutation begins before the animal is even born. Therefore, the egg came first.

    Depends on whether the egg is part of the new "mutation".

    The animal inside the egg is mutated. By egg, we refer to the egg and whatever is inside of it.

    So, yes, it is obviously part of the new mutation. A non-chicken animal laid an egg that contained a chicken. That is how it works.

    The egg came first.

    Edit: I didn't get my answer from Wikipedia, just from knowledge of evolution, but I checked Wikipedia and it agreed with me:

    By egg I meant the egg without the chicken inside. But judging from that wiki text, it seems like the egg is part of the mutation.

    though I actually dont really believe in the bible, it claims that the chicken came first. And it makes more sense.

    Relz is right. It is the egg. Even "if" chickens spawned from amebas or some sort of 1 celled organism. A chicken was only a chicken when it was born the way they are now of days. Everything on the evelutionary chain that lead up to a chicken was NOT a chicken, and it does not matter if they laid eggs or not. Because we are speaking about chickens, not dinosaurs. And... what are chickens born into... you guessed it, eggs!

    Here is a sum up;
    Dino humps another dino. Makes a dino mutant baby. That mutant baby humps a mutant baby of another dino with compatible DNA. The chain continues on until we have super mutant dino that spawned from tons of dinos. And a mutant dino that lay eggs. They humped and created the first ever chicken. In an egg.
