Desert islands just mean tht its unoccupied, some desert islands have trees, bushes ect.

Correct, the name comes from 'Deserted'.

He did NOT "jump' off the island, it is surrounded by cliffs, he would have died from the fall.

How'd he get to the island?
And how could he swim away in the first place?

there are a few answers i can think of...
1-it was a camp fire so he gathered up shrubs and ate them.
2-the wind blew the fire out and after he built a barrier from the wind so he wouldnt get blown away...
3-he dug himself a pit because the fire was close and barried himself deep enough so the fire wouldnt get him but close enough to the surface he could get out

The correct answer to this riddle, is he runs all the way up to the fire line, gets a stick and ignites it, then runs half way back and starts a second fire. While the first fire is burning across from one side (lets say the east) to the middle, the second fire is burning its way across from the middle to the west side. By the time the original fire gets to the middle of the island, the whole second half of the island will be already burned out, and the original fire will just burn itself out and die.

This is one of those riddles I absolutely HATE, because there's a million answers that could be right, it's too vague. The wind changes direction, it rains, anything could happen. Even the "right" answer could be completely wrong, if the second fire didn't burn through as quick as the first one then you could just get trapped between the two and die. It's dumb. A riddle should only have one clear answer, and everything else is wrong.

But I digress.

The answer I stated above is the "correct" answer to the riddle, and should be the answer your teacher is looking for.
