Change the text on your start button!

Alright so I figured I'd post this for anyone who wants it. This tutorial was made by me and all pictures are mine to.

I've seen alot of these tutorials out there that say you can only change the text to another 5 character string, well they are wrong.

If you have any trouble post here and I'll answer your questions.

Note - This does not work with Vista

!!!MAKE SURE YOU BACKUP YOUR EXPLORER.EXE!!!

Ok so here we go. First you'll need to download Resource Hacker (http://www.angusj.com/resourcehacker/).

Then open it up and you'll get a window like this:


Choose File > Open... and navigate to C:\WINDOWS\explorer.exe and open it.


Then, in the left pane, expand the String Table folder then the 37 folder then click on 1033


Now in the right pane highlight the word start (do not highlight the quotations.


Change start to whatever you want, length does not matter.


You'll notice that the Compile Script button is now enabled. Click it. Then choose File > Save As... and give it a new name.



Okay, now we are done with resource hacker, go ahead and close it. Now click start > Run... and type regedit then hit Ok


A new window will open. By clicking on the folders in the left pane, navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE > SOFTWARE > Microsoft > Windows NT > Current Version > WinLogon Then in the right pane double click on Shell (it is highlighted in the picture) and change the value to whatever you saved your explorer.exe as.


Voila! You're done. Now just log off then back on, or reboot and marvel at you shiny new button.

i knew it already but i forgot too. thanks you post it now i know again. but how bout the recycle bin i forgot it to on how to rename it. hope you would reply. :wave:
