    Are Paint Brushes Cheats?

I myself have used photoshop for 2 years now, and have become a bit of an expert at it. I use brushes pretty often, so I am wondering... If you use brushes, are you simply taking someone elses work and labeling it yours? Sure you have to know where you want to put it, and what color, but that is relatively basic. I don't know if I should call it mine or not.

I have felt a bit guilty lately when I make something for someone, and say it was my designed, even though I used other peoples brushes. One thing I read about professional graphic artist is that they use brushes so that made me feel a bit better.

I just want to know what Your opinion is. Please respond and let me know.

Well i would have to say it would be yours... i dont think having someones brushes would make it theres... Where do you get your renders?.... it would be the same thing inless you made the photo and made the render.

    Re: Are Paint Brushes Cheats?

Its not cheating because they allow you to use them for free, and its hard to credit someone for their work with every sig, I think its more of a mental thing, your going to feel better about yourself when you make your own brushes to do everything by yourself (I have started making my own brushes), the thing is, if you think its cheating, dont do it and learn how to make your own, it still takes skill to know how to use the brushes and use them right, its just just like its going to be the same as anyone else, no brush work is the same, ever, its impossible. Brushes are just another tool to make a signature look better, its not stealing someone elses work because of the fact its just helping your sig look better.

If they make their brushes open you're not stealing. They gave the world permission to use it.

I'm a graphic designer, my in-house department has a very small budget. We use a mind-boggling array of free (legal) brushes, stock photos, etc. The faster we get the job done, the less turn around time, the more time we have to get drunk.

In summary, if the license for the brush you are using allows for whatever you want to do with it - more power to you.

You may also want to read up fair use for non-professional uses

:icon_angered: first off that was exceedingly rude... his sig is awesome... second off how do you know he did not develop that by hand? he has the tools to do it if he has photoshop.... eeesh don't mean to bite your head off but being so rude when you don't know all the important facts ( called being ignorant ftw...) is a annoyance of mine... ok ill get off tha soap box now and go to my corner.

    Re: Are Paint Brushes Cheats?

I dont know if you guys understand, I don't care about "Legal" isues, its just more about saying "Hey I made this, what do you think" when all over it is brushes not made "by you". thats all, and thanks for the post Lag, that makes since.
If your a graphics artist, you just wanna get done and have it look good, and that makes using brushes easier for me.

and @ that dude that made the comment about my sig, I didnt make it hsnap:if i wanted one with a rendor i would take a ss in wow and cut it out.

    Re: Are Paint Brushes Cheats?

I dont use brushes, I use to. When I did it did take making sigs faster and easier but then I got over them Id rather put more time in my sig, than put some brushes in and call it a job done. yeah I do use a soft brush for light, I have custom brushes I never use them the only brush custom made I used is a smudging one. I see have new comers use them but as I became more skilled I grew out of them. In a little way I think they are cheap if somebody brags about their work that just has brushes

Im not saying im the god of Photoshop Im anything but, but I dont think im a beginner

PS: don't take offense this is my opinion

Hey, the final product is your art, regardless of the medium. Especially art that's not for profit. Cut + Paste = No Skill, Cut + Paste + Manipulate = Your work. Sure there are various degrees of quality, but at least you didn't just SS a loading screen and pop your name over it in paint.exe

    Just do it

    Re: Are Paint Brushes Cheats?

I use brushes in sigs and some pictures when I'm bored. But when i can be bothered actually making one of my shoddy renders in C4d, i use just use some effects to try and make it look rad. Actually i don't think this helped, but anyway, i don't really feel guilty. I'm not really doing anything wrong i guess.

Exact same situation as I am. Im a freelance matte painter, and have been for years and i used legal brushes and iStockPhoto's. It makes 'everthing' alot easier. But with these legal brushes and photo's if you can turn it into something of your own, it is in way your whole creation. The way i get permission for my brushes is asking them, a lot of them really don't mind.
