You can equip a 2 hander with a shield, catalyst or dual wield.

1. Put desired 2 hander into your crafting forge.
2. Equip shield, catalyst or weapon in your off hand.
3. Shift right click your body armour to send it to the forge, this will bring the 2 handed weapon into your main weapon slot.
4. Profit
