i can log in, create player and start new local game - but it stops and console says :

[Error] [MooNetClient]: Not bound to client service bnet.protocol.game_master.GameFactorySubscriber [0xC6F9CCC5] yet. <-- in red !

And ingame shows timed out error !

All seems well and I get to the character select screen. I click on START GAME and it hangs and doesn't connect.

It means your Diablo III Beta client is still on patch 9, let the Launcher update all the way to patch 10 until it finishes, then try again, OR, use the patch 9 mooege, your call.
