Straight off the heels of saying that “much, much learning has happened” and that “it would be possible not to” learn some hard lessons from Warlords of Draenor, Blizzard today announced that World of Warcraft: Legion will be the next installment in the World of Warcraft franchise.
Speculation has been rife about what the next expansion will be about over the last month or so, with theories from Azshara to Zul, visiting the Emerald Dream to returning to Northrend. Blizzard developers going out of their way to post fake leaks of their own on Twitter to generate hype, it’s safe to say that the time is right for a new expansion. As pointed out at the beginning of the announcement, no speculation or "leak" got it right.
The Burning Legion is coming to Azeroth, and it’s the largest Demonic invasion the World has ever witnessed, making the War of the Ancients pale in comparison. The Tomb of Sargeras on the Broken Isles has been opened once more, and the Burning Legion seeks to bring Sargeras himself to Azeroth.
Before the release of the expansion, there will be an assault, similar in nature to the Assault on the Dark Portal for Warlords of Draenor, but promising that every player will be “surprised and shocked”.
New Class: Demon Hunters
Demon Hunters will be the new class for Legion. They’ll be starting at a yet-undisclosed high level with a unique starting experience. Awakening in the Vault of the Wardens, you’ll play through the a storyline set ten years ago as an Illidari - one of Illidan’s Demon Hunters from the Black Temple where you’ll learn what it is to be a Demon Hunter, and learn the true meaning of sacrifice.
The appearance of a Demon Hunter is highly customisable, allowing you to customise your horn style, type, size or even have no horns at all. Tattoos will be a part of the appearance as expected, and gear for Demon Hunters will be created with these tattoos in mind. Skin styles vary from normal to scaly or demonic in nature, and eyewear styles come in all different shapes and sizes.
In a World of Warcraft first, the Demon Hunter will only have two specs - Havoc (DPS) and Vengeance (Tank).Blizzard made the decision to stick to two specs in order to keep to the essence of what a Demon Hunter truly is. Metamorphosis will play a role in both specs for Demon Hunters.
Artifact Weapons: An Artifact for Every Spec
Artifacts are a new style of weapon that will be a prominent feature in this expansion. Each spec will have their own Artifact weapon, such as the legenadary Ashbringer for Retribution Paladins, Dath’Remar’s own sword Felo’melorn for Fire Mages, Icebringer and Soulreaper, forged from the fragments of Frostmourne for Frost Death Knights and Sheilun, Staff of the Mists - Shao’hao’s own staff for Mistweaver monks. Feral and Guardian druids will have unique and customisable skins instead of weapon skins.
Artifact weapons can be upgraded through nearly any activity in the game - dungeons, raids, PvP, major quest lines and more. These upgrades allow you to unlock weapon-specific talents to customise them to your like.
The appearance of the weapon can also be customised by unlocking them through various means, such as PvP.
Class Orders
With the Horde and the Alliance at each other’s throats, classes band together to fight the Burning Legion. Each class will have its own base of operations, and unlike Garrisons, they will be a shared space.
Not every location has been revealed, but it is known that Shamans will have theirs in the Maelstrom, surrounded by the Elements. Paladins will have theirs under Light’s Hope Chapel, and Warlocks will be on a Legion World.
As an evolution of followers, you’ll be able to recruit class champions. There will be far less of them, but they’ll be much more important. You will be able to go out into the world with them and complete quests and challenges.
Zones
The Broken Isles are the new continent for World of Warcraft: Legion, with Dalaran as the capital city. Featuring zones such as Suramar - home to a race of Elves that have lived independent for the last ten thousand years and now pawns of the Burning Legion, Stormheim - home of the Vyrkul that left Northrend thousands of years ago and Azsuna - and ancient Night Elf civilisation.
Other zones include Highmountain, Val’Sharah, Thal’Dranath and a yet-unnamed zone.
Dungeons and Raids
Blizzard started off by admitting that they’ve neglected dungeons lately, and done them a large disservice. The new dungeons will be designed with replayability in mind, and there will be more of them.
Dungeons include the Eye of Azshara, Darkheart Thicket, Neltharion’s Lair, Helheim, Suramar City, Violet Hold, Halls of Valor, Vault of the Wardens and Black Rook Hold.
Blizzard was happy with the tier structure of Warlords, so The Emerald Nightmare and Suramar Palace will be the first two raids of the tier.
The Emerald Nightmare takes place in the Emerald Dream that has become twisted and corrupted. There will be 7 bosses, and you’ll fight Xavius, leader of the Satyr.
Suramar Palace is located in the ancient Night Elf capital of Suramar. It’s the location of the Nightwell, and where players will finally be able to face off against Gul’dan, as well as 10 other bosses.
PvP
PvP is undergoing a massive revamp in all aspects.
By gaining honor points, you’ll gain ranks, up to Rank 50. Along the way, you’ll earn perks and bonuses, including PvP-specific talents. They will be completely separate from your regular talent tree, and are designed for, and only work in PvP environments and situations, allowing for much better balancing overall. Each class and spec will have their own PvP talents to make for some very interesting choices.
After reaching max rank, you can reset your rank in order to earn purely cosmetic rewards such as Mounts, Portrait Icons and unique Artifact weapon skins. These will not affect gameplay, but only exist to give those players, both hardcore and casual of any skill level who value cosmetics, vanity and cool rewards a reason to continue to PvP outside a rated environment.
