  • "World of Starcraft" A remote possibility, or reality?

Starcraft II can be called a major success. Not only did it bring back the action-packed strategy that kept Starcraft fresh for years, but it gave us a whole new engine to play with when making our own maps and mods for the game.

Seeing that Blizzard spent so much time and money developing an entirely new engine for Starcraft II, you would think that they did so not only to keep their customers entertained with map making, but to invest in something for the long haul.

Have no idea what I'm talking about? Take a look at this:

This stunning engine can be applied to future titles. Considering that Blizzard is in the process of making their new MMO, I would be willing to wager that this MMO is based in the Starcraft universe, despite previous announcements by Blizzard that the title was outside all of their current universes.

It is likely that Blizzard will follow the same model that World of Warcraft followed:

    1.) Release a successful RTS
2.) Follow it up with an MMO based off of that successful RTS

It is even more likely now that we see that they've spent over one hundred million dollars on the engine for Starcraft II
alone. Blizzard's release of the engine map creator to the public is a way to test the waters and the potential of the system.

Let's face it, Blizzard is a corporation. They create things because it generates revenue. If you just take a look at some of the RPG and MMO maps that players have been creating with the Starcraft II engine, you can see that adapting the engine to an MMO would be nearly effortless.

Blizzard is gauging their players' interest in the Starcraft universe. They released a public poll on Battle.net that asks their customers which Starcraft world they'd like to live on if they could.

Why a sci-fi MMO? Well, Blizzard is going to be competing with the new "The Old Republic" MMO. If the 40K MMO isn't just more fan-base niche dead weight on THQ's back, then it will also be in great competition with TOR and Blizzard's new MMO (Which is undeniably Starcraft). Blizzard is going to have to get innovative here.

So what is the formula for market success in the brave new world of next gen MMOs? Researchers say that it is a feeling of immersion and "change". Moving beyond the static world of last gen MMOs to follow a formula similar to Bioware's games like Mass Effect and Dragon Age, where the player's actions influence the entire continuity of the universe. Perhaps Blizzard's new "Starcraft" MMO won't focus on world-changing decisions, but I'm willing to bet they're going to use the engine for a whole lot of customization. Perhaps let players build and upgrade their own ships and vehicles, or even create towns and structures.

This is beyond speculation, folks. You heard it here first. If I lose this bet, I'll buy you a drink.

Even though blizzard do occasionally change their mind about things they announce, they have most likely already started working on the new MMO and they probably had even before the announcement that it will be based on a new franchise.

The success of the engine used for starcraft 2 does not mean in any way that the new mmo will be about starcraft, it can be used just as well for any other franchise.

Yes, this new engine will probably be used, but it will most likely just be a updated version of the one used in sc2, just like wow used the warcraft 3 engine.

Warhammer, aion, aoc, and the other 'wow killers' failed completely with competing with wow, and expecting TOR or the 40K mmo to stand a chance is just going to lead to dissapointment.

Nah, it would break tradition to release the MMO before making three of the RTS games. j/k. it would be interesting, but what i'm interetsed in more then anything (SC related) is a SC first person or third person shooter.

The fact they made a new engine doesn't mean it HAS to be a Starcraft MMO, especially when they said it's going to be a new franchise. I definitely think they didn't put $100,000,000 into an engine just for players fun, but that's a far cray from evidence as Starcraft being the next MMO.

The new MMO will be Blackthorne, a game from SNES. A year ago, Blizzard re-purchased the copyright information to this one specific game after years. Posting about the possibility of a Blackthorne MMO is a guaranteed way to get your thread deleted almost immediately as opposed to writing about a Starcraft MMO will be allowed to stay up. You are right about the next MMO being futuristic / sci-fi but Starcraft wasn't it. As soon as the announcement comes, I'd like a shot of Jack sent my way.

Well there's one main reason i don't think there will be a starcraft 2 MMO...

      1. They have stated clearly there will NOT be a starcraft MMO full stop.

      also

      2. They have stated the new MMO will not be like any other mmo, i don't see why they would release what will essentially look like war hammer 40K, or to an extent even the star wars mmo's.

Nothing is set in stone, Emilie.
In the past, Blizzard has stated many things will "never" happen. Paid character transfers, customization, race+faction changes, etc. The point is, just because it's not planned doesn't mean it won't happen; if there is a high demand for it, why wouldn't they do it? It's a company, if a company sees that their customers want something ELSE on the menu, they'll put it on the menu. That's how they make money.

Personally, I don't think the MMO they've been working on is for Starcraft, but I do believe that once the next expansions come out for SC2 (HoTS and LotV), they'll have time to work on the new MMO.

Of course, we won't see it for 20 years, but it'll be a start.

Actually on last mention they said we could expect it, COULD, around 2015, so just 5 years=P

I seriously hope for a sandbox game in the spirit of Elite (1984 video game). EVE Online is the only solid Elite type MMO right now and I have no doubt that Blizzard could trump it, with a better UI, addon support, more interesting quests, more accessible for beginners ... It wouldn't have to be in space but I'm sure a lot of people would pay for a sandbox MMO that doesn't suck and isn't EVE.

Can I just take my drink now instead of waiting for word that you're wrong? Lets's see here...

Blizzard announced that it's outside of any universe they've been working on. Well obviously they're not blatantly lying to us, so obviously it's not Starcraft-based.

Starcraft 2 map editor had so much money poured into it because Blizzard cares about *quality*, Starcraft 2 wasn't going to be some half-assed game to make more money, they made it to be one of those defining games of the time.

Blizzard couldn't just use the editor for an mmo. The entire mechanic of the map system is great for making playable maps and all, but is a horrible system to use for an MMO, hence why they have a completely different system that works completely differently.

Yes, they made a poll for people to see what planet people might be from in the universe. This isn't "gauging people's interest", it's called "marketing". Hyping up people's interest in a game, and constantly keeping a community for these people playing this game is a good way to have a good customer base. I mean, look at how Bungie interacts with their community, that doesn't just instantly hint they're coming out with something BIG by looking at people's "interest" in their game.

Blizzard will be making it to compete with the new "The Old Republic" MMO? What company would seriously make a game for the sole purpose of competing with another game that shares he same genre? That makes absolutely no sense, as it would just be a low blow, and Blizzard defiantly doesn't play like that.

Finally, Blizzard said they aren't making a Starcraft MMO, i mean seriously, are you that blunt to think they would lie to you? That would be counter-productive in the first place. Imagine how much hype they could stir up by keeping "starcraft" and "mmo" together, they would have tens of millions of people that would instantly buy the game years before it comes out.
