Mmowned World of Tanks Beta Review and Giveaway
We will be mailing out the keys on Monday!
We took a drive in some of the most powerful tanks in the game, like the Soviet S1 heavy tanker. I blasted my way through crowds of endless light tanks, using the cover of ruined buildings to block long-ranged artillery from taking out my tank. Most of the people on my team were continually shelled by artillery fire, so I didn't want to get close to them.
The first thing noticable about World of Tanks is the influence of the RTS genre. Tanks will need to move in groups and coordinate their assault over diversely sized maps in order to win the match.
When you start the game, you are armed with a light tank and a tank team. Your team is comprised of a commander, gunner, driver, and loader. The experience of your tank team will rise with each match you play, and each tank you kill. The better your team, the easier it is to manuever and fire your tank.
Light tanks are typically faster but lack a good amount of firepower. Medium tanks are right in the middle and will be the bulk of a military force at any given time. Heavy tankers are slow and lumbering, but pack a punch like no other. Artillery tanks use the fast, light tanks on their team to spot the enemy team and shell them with long-range firepower. Tank-busters are anti-tank vehicles piloted by players that perform "artillery patrol", and bust artillery from close range.
The only criticism I have of the game is a lack of customization. While the tech trees and research allow you to upgrade to new guns on your tank, I felt that the tanks should be able to be customized on a more personal level. It would be nice to see the players be able to purchase decals and new camo graphics from the online store, perhaps.
The music and sound are crisp. There is an immense attention to detail from a historical standpoint, and the company emulated the sound of the tank tracks and guns perfectly. It feels as if you're watching a military documentary or an epic World War II film.
Graphics: 9/10
The graphics are good. Perhaps not the most cutting edge, but they get the job done.
Sound: 10/10
WoT has amazing sound design. Hats off to the sound engineers working on this game.
Gameplay: 9/10
The gameplay is strategic and realistic. One of the best war games I've yet played; white knuckle action abound!
Overall: 9.5/10
While it will not be a major contender in the Fantasy MMO Market, I believe that WoT will give games like EVE online a run for their money.
