whenever i download a patch now, it turn's into a note pad file, will it still work? plus if it doesn't can i please get help with how to change it back to normal

with a patch, you're meaning a MPQ-file, right?
It turns into notepad icon because you've previously clicked "open as..." and chosen notepad and ticked the button "Always open with this program", which makes MPQ-files open in notepad when double-clicked.
If it still has the "MPQ file" tag when you mouse over it, and not "txt file", it is not a problem, they will still function normally. If it does have "txt file", however, I have absolutely no idea what to do, as I have not had that problem myself.
