I Have the M2... Now What?

After lurking for a couple of years, I've finally decided to stop wishing for model edits to be made, and just start trying my own hand at them--at least to know what it's like to go through making one. But, I'm stuck.

How do I get to the actual model inside the M2?

I have my 3DSMax sitting open and idle. I've downloaded a hundred little tools from here. I've looked through many tutorials, but they all appear to tell how to convert to an M2, not from. What have I missed? What do I need?

It depends, what are you trying to do? Export and M2 to a different type of 3d model so that you can edit it? If so, I would suggest you get the newest version of WoWModel Viewer ( WoW WOTLK Model Viewer - Download here ) and then do the following.

    1) Install, and point it to a valid WoW client
    2) Locate the model you want to export for editing
    3) Go to File> Export Model> and then choose the type of 3d object you want to make it
    4) Edit the model and use all those tutorials you found to export it as an M2, then make a new MPQ archive, placing it in the correct treepath
