Reskinning help, where to start?

Okay, i want to do some simple color changes to armor and weapons but i have no idea where to start.
I've checked out alot of posts here and found a few programs and tuts, but either i can't get the programs to work, or the tutorials themselves have a step or two that throws me off completely.

Can someone point me in the right direction?

I have tried to mess with MyWarcraftStudio and every time i try to load a .m2 it crashes. I read this would happen if i didn't update it, so i googled for the latest one and poof i still crash.

Is it because of WoTLK?
If so is there another program that i could use instead?
