[Guide] How to install and play World of Warcraft on Linux uBuntu

    Hello!

This one is for all you gamers out there. Did you know (I know, you probably did) that World of Warcraft will work on an Ubuntu system? You just need to add a few things to get it going but its really not hard at all. I have been playing for some time now (although I don’t get to as much as I’d sometimes like). Below are instructions for installing and running World of Warcraft on an Ubuntu system. (Thanks goes to this page for original information)
You’ll need to install the latest version of WINE for World of Warcraft to be able to function. You can do that the following ways (depending on your Ubuntu version)
    Code:
deb http://wine.budgetdedicated.com/apt edgy main (Edgy Systems)
deb http://wine.budgetdedicated.com/apt dapper main (Dapper Systems)
deb http://wine.budgetdedicated.com/apt breezy main (Breezy Systems)
After you’ve installed the appropriate line to your repositories you’ll need to run the following two commands:
    Code:
    sudo aptitude update
    sudo aptitude install wine
The next step is to copy all files from your World of Warcraft CD’s to a directory on your hard drive (overwrite when prompted). This, of course, will take a few minutes.
    When this is finished run:
    Code:
    ALT-F2 : wine path/to/warcraft/installation/Install.exe
(you can also optionally copy the World of Warcraft folder from a Windows installation.)
You’ve now got World of Warcraft installed and just about ready to play. You’ll want to tweak one more thing before you get going though.
World of Warcraft seems to work best using OSS audio. To set this you can do the following:
    Code:
    ALT-F2 : winecfg

In the resulting menu select “Audio” and then select “OSS driver”
.. and then one last thing before you get playing. You’ll need to add a few lines to a configuration file and then you should be in business.
    Code:
    ALT-F2 : gksudo gedit path/to/warcraft/installation/WTF/config.WTF
    add the lines:
    Code:
    SET SoundOutputSystem “1″
    SET SoundBufferSize “100″
    SET gxApi “OpenGL”
Happy gaming. Ooh, I nearly forgot. To launch Warcraft you can use the following command or create a launcher with this path:
    Code:
    wine path/to/warcraft/installation/WoW.exe

Maybe Linux can't run EXE's without having extra software (WINE), it's still ownage

Thanks for throwing all of this out here, but a lot of that info's very out of date. There have been two releases since Edgy, Feisty and Gutsy, and the in development hardy. ALSA is now the recommended sound out option in wine, you shouldn't have to buffer sound, and most people find the defautl direct3d mode to work better/more efficiently than opengl. Short story: for most people running an nvidia card, you'll probably find it working out of the box. ATI's newest linux drivers are getting there too, so ATI users might have more luck than in the past o newer cards.

The biggest thing here, this is by no means specific to ubuntu, this goes for all linux distros, be it ubuntu, fedora, gentoo, SuSe, whatever, as long as you get 3D accel working, and can use the basic aspects of a terminal, you can run WoW on Linux (most of the time, I won't call it flawless, works out of the box these days for me at full frames of windows)

For the record, I have an e4500 C2D rig with 2GB of DC DDR2 RAM, and an nVidia 7300GT, though it played fine with the same card, 1GB of DDR, and an AMD 3700+.

The thing about 'EXE's isn't diectly true either... that's just a label for executables, by standard we don't use extensions for things like that, but if you look at mono, by convention, they stick to the .exe extension for native-ish Linux, BSD (MacOS), and Windows Apps.

    I'm a bit of a linux geek =]
I'm geeky enough to play on Linux...

    Yeah, I just mentioned Toxicity999.
I have Gutsy atm, but, yeah, I know there's some problems with Wine, and it's outdated and all that crap, but, if you follow the guide, you can install and play WoW.
I didn't say that it maybe sucks while playing :P

    I'm a linux-geek too

there's a little program called crossover, its basically wine, but it auto setups apps for you that it has preconfigured, so install crossover ( available on most torrent sites, and have you wow cds ready, theres also a mac verson for someme odd reason, but thats mainly for office xp and another programs, but ya.
